PERSONAL INJURIES
Injuries to Seamen
Seaman:
Merchant seamen, dredge workers, tugboat
crewmembers and any maritime worker who
is injured and is more or less permanently
attached as a worker to a vessel or fleet
of vessels. Depending on the nature of
their work, ship-fitters, welders and
others may also qualify as seamen.
Some
cases we have handled:
- Representation of marine
construction worker whose foot was partially
severed by a defective crane mounted
on a barge.
- Representation of ship's
chief engineer who was injured when
an inert gas system exploded causing
him head and facial injuries.
- Seaman who lost part
of his foot in a crane accident.
- Chief Mate who seriously
injured his arm and shoulder when he
had to go on deck during heavy weather.
- Tug Operator who slipped
and fell while boarding tug due to absence
of a proper gangway, injuring his back,
requiring surgery.
- Dredge Captain who was
permanently disabled after he slipped
and fell on oily water on a barge. He
required three back surgeries.
- Welder on dredging project
who injured his back while lifting a
dredge bit into place.
- Welder injured when he
was struck in the face by a loose cable
during dredge operations.
- Death to three fishermen
whose boat was struck by a water spout
while they were anchored at sea.
- Longshoreman crushed
by a ships crane.
Injuries to Passengers
on Cruise Ships
Cruise
ships include not only large passenger
carrying ships taking cruises to the Bahamas
and the Caribbean, but also gambling boats
and sightseeing boats. Our firm handles
cases involving injuries to passengers
on cruise ships leaving from Port Canaveral,
Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, or Key
West.
Some cases we have handled:
- Representation of passenger
who was injured when parts of a chandelier
fell from the ceiling of a cruise ship,
striking her in the head.
- Injuries to a cruise
ship passenger who fell in a washroom
due to a water leak.
- Injuries to infant whose
arm was caught in an elevator on a cruise
ship, along with the emotional distress
claim of the infant's mother.
- Slip and fall of passenger
in stateroom head due to persistent
leak from rusting pipe.
- Slip and fall of passenger
on deck outside dining area due to wear
on non-skid decking material.
Injuries
to Shipyard Workers, Longshoremen* and
Other Maritime Workers
Maritime
workers who suffer injuries while on a
ship, which is caused by a dangerous condition
on the ship, are entitled to file claims
against the owner or operator of the vessel
Some cases we have handled:
- Representation of Longshoremen who
had a load of cargo dropped on them due
to faulty crane
- Representation of Estate of longshoreman killed in Fort Lauderdale when a shoreside gantry crane crushed him with a container.
* We no longer handle claims
for compensation under the Longshore and
Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, or Section
8(f) second injury fund claims.
Injuries Aboard
Naval Vessels
Some cases we have handled:
- Turkish seamen (150) injured
and killed (3) when their vessel was struck
by two sea sparrow missiles during NATO
training exercises in the Mediterranean
Sea
- Rigger injured when he fell
down a ladder with worn non-skid surface
aboard a U.S. Navy vessel being re-fitted
for donation to another country
- Representation of shipyard worker whose eardrum was blown out due to faulty loudspeaker on U.S. Naval Vessel.
